The first Underground metro line in Bangalore is up and running. This is a good achievement for the city. There has been a great amount of engineering done by local aswell as other engineers. Similar infrastructure development is expected in the country in this decade. Are our young engineers skilled to take up this challenge?
Bangalore is also an outsourcing hub for various US and UK based engineering firms. In addition to cost advantage, there is tremendous shortage of engineers in the west and hence this outsourcing.
Has the government and the universities done enough to tap these opportunities and to upskill the engineering students in our country.Has there been an attempt to understand the growing demands of the consulting firms and to fill the gaps between education and industry demands. There is a need to do this now and also to make young citizen of this country aware of the importance of conventional branches of engineering.
There is also a need to empower engineers and to enforce engineering by adopting stringent quality checks in terms of regulations. The growing number of accidents in infrastructure aswell as building sector points to this.Government of India has introduced a real estate regulatory bill. This mainly deals with delays in construction and using funds properly. We also need stringent measures to ensure quality of design and construction. As an example,in the building sector, for an approval for commencing construction, structural drawings or stability certificate is not mandatory in many parts of the country. This should change and there should be no compromise on safety.
These regulations and need of regulations to ensure safety and quality are not even part of the post graduate studies of civil or structural engineering.
There is a need to upskill and empower engineers.Institutions, government, consulting bodies and Association of engineers and consultants should work together to achieve this.
We at ''Design Dimensions'' in additon to consulting conducts training programs on analysis and design of buildings to skill engineers. Our programees not only skills engineers but also equipps them with clear understanding on their role as an engineer and the building regulations in each states in India
